Story Drama in the Elementary Classroom

ONLY LIVE

This workshop centres around the picture book, "Encounter" by Brittany Luby, illustrated by Mikaela Goade. Educators are introduced to drama and movement exercises that encourage active engagement in the anchor text. They will participate as their students would, while still having an opportunity to ask questions and engage in professional discourse. They will learn how to conduct a story drama through text exploration using character, relationship, environment-building, writing in role, improvisation, soundscapes, dialogue, and more. Teachers will discover that drama does not require a culminating, rehearsed performance piece that is scripted and needs an audience, and the recommended exercises and activities can apply directly to cross-curricular consolidation of learning.

Michelle has taught with TDSB Elementary for 15 years. She is an actor, puppeteer, and the founder of Story Drama Suite, offering consulting and immersive storytelling workshops for educators. Michelle holds a BEd. and a BFA Honours in theatre. She has studied drama techniques in Canada, the US, and Europe.
