Social Health, Arts and Personal Education for Older Citizens through Drama

SHAPE is an acronym for Social Health, Arts and Personal Education. The SHAPE project at Dublin City University is led by lecturers in drama, visual art and wellbeing and the project aims to integrate the areas of arts and wellbeing education. This presentation discusses research which relates to older citizens’ drama and arts engagement in a course exploring themes relating to life-balance, heroism within, making one’s mark and future ambitions. Results and recommendations are made in relation to the following areas:

1) How does engagement in drama and the arts impact the social health development of older adults?

2) What is the best way to facilitate older adults’ engagement in drama and the arts?

3) What are the effects of participation in drama and the arts on older people’s health and wellbeing?

4) What learning from drama teaching in the non formal sector is applicable to drama teacher education?
