Shaping Tomorrow's Drama Education: The Evolution of People’s Theatre
in Hong Kong
This academic paper aims to consolidate the work and impact of
pioneering Hong Kong-based drama educator and People’s Theatre
practitioner Augustine Mok, who also co-directed the IDEA Congress in
2007. This research examines how Mok introduced, promoted, and
developed a series of creative practices in Hong Kong since the 1990s,
enhancing theatre art education and community-based cultural
development practices among educators, humanistic therapy
practitioners, and the public. It will conduct three case studies and
employ Semi-Structured Interviews with creative practitioners as research
methods to explore three evolving theatre forms in Hong Kong:
Landscape Theatre, Playforward Theatre, and Ritual Theatre. These
innovative theatre forms, developed by various theatre artists and
educators from the 2000s to the 2020s, will be analyzed in terms of their
inspiration, creation, and implementation. Furthermore, the paper will
discuss the implications of these theatre forms and Mok's work on the
development of drama education in Hong Kong.
