Exploring Research-based Theatre to engage in transdisciplinary, artistic, and global conversations
90 minutes
ONLY LIVE
This performative workshop introduces participants to Research-based Theatre by both showing the methodology in action to highlight its characteristics, and then inviting attendees to engage in a process around this methodology to better understand its place, potential and parameters.
As an arts-based methodology, Research-based Theatre invites researchers, artists, educators and research participants to collectively create theatre that explores and translates research phenomena in an embodied, visceral manner. This approach makes use of applied theatre and drama-based strategies, and at its core rests on two commitments: a) to honor and ethically explore a research context; and b) engage and commit to the art form of theatre.
I have been a Professor of Drama/Theatre Education for over 20 years. I am trained actor and I have performed professionally. I also have 7 years of teaching drama in secondary schools, followed by now 20 years of working with Theatre teachers and graduate students in Drama Education. I have given over 100 workshops around the world, along with 15 keynote addresses to Drama Education audiences globally. I have over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including books, journal articles and book chapters all on the topic of Drama and Theatre Education. I lead the UBC Research-based Theatre Lab which explores artistic and transdisciplinary approaches to research and it involved over 100 members: researchers, teachers, artists and community members.
