Improvisational theatre education for future teachers to harmonize
“spontaneity” and “peer pressure” in Japan
The purpose of this paper is to clarify whether learning impro
(improvisational theatre) help future teachers harmonize “spontaneity”
and “peer pressure.” Japan is a country with a culture that emphasizes
“peer pressure,'” or in other words, consideration of others and
conformity to others. University students who aim to become teachers in
the future also suffer from peer pressure. In this study, the author formed
an impro team with 10 students to examine whether learning impro,
which emphasizes “spontaneity,” would lead to a reduction in peer
pressure among students. This presentation depicts how students overcome “peer pressure” through an analysis of students' pre-individual
interviews and their words and actions during impro workshops in the
team.
